College education + law school + passing the bar exam = right to practice law. So that would be about 9 years. However I have never heard of a “family lawyer”. There are lawyers in small towns that handle just about everything that comes to them so maybe that is what you mean.
How much do you earn? It depends on how many people come to you and how many cases you win.
After graduating from high school, you need a four year degree. Then you need to take the LSAT exam and get into a law school. After three years of law school, you will (hopefully) have a jurisdoctorate degree. Then you would need to take the bar exam of the state you want to practice law in. Assuming you pass the bar exam, you could potentially be a licensed and practicing family law attorney within eight years of graduating from high school.
The income ranges from $0 to $250k per year – with a very few attorneys making more than that. It depends on 1. How long you have been practicing; 2. Where you practice; 3. The types of clients you represent; 4. And a whole host of other variables.
Some family law attorneys will go bankrupt and lose their practices. Others just plod along and make enough to get by. Still others do well enough to have a comfortable lifestyle. Attorneys who represent the Donald Trumps/Larry Kings of the country are millionaires.
